As the pyramid above illustrates, more than 5 million businesses with 1 to 19 employees exist in the Unites States today.  For the business owners of those businesses, retiring well and exiting properly will require extra planning. At the outset of the exit planning process, the exit goals will be impacted by the financial and mental readiness of the owner.

Where is the exiting business owner on the Questmont Exit Readiness Scale?  Financially or Mentally motivated? Both? And, how do you determine where the business owner is on the readiness scale?

Figuring out where the business owners are plotted on the readiness scale is no easy task.  To do so, business owners have a lot to consider, including:

  • What will they accomplish with their exit?
  • Does the Exit plan include selling the business?
  • Do they know what portion of their wealth is tied to the business?
  • How important is it to leave a legacy to their employees or family members?
  • Where do they see themselves in 20/10/5/2 years?
  • Has the amount of net proceeds required to satisfy the owner's estimated financial expense after the exit been measured?
